“Advocacy” is more about your Character than your Work

RecommendedTwo scenarios…which one would you prefer if they were your employees?

Hi Bob…I wanted to tell you about Sally’s work. She did a really great job with the project and her technical prowess was exactly what we had hoped for. She was able to complete it on time and within budget so we could complete our part of the project.

Hi Carol…I want to tell you about Joe. Not only did she do a great job on the project but was such a pleasure to work with throughout the entire experience. As I got to know her I soon realized she is someone I can trust implicitly and will always do whatever she can to figure something out or get me the best solution possible. What a pleasure to deal with someone of this character.

Both are advocating for you. Both are positive and great information about the person.

Which one would you call FIRST…Sally or Joe?

Which one best describes how someone would advocate for someone in your organization, if they would advocate at all? Which one leaves you feeling so positive you would have no question about hiring? Maybe both…but one gets the call first.

This is the difference between “advocating based on character and experience” vs. “advocating based on work product.” Both work…one just works better. I always choose better when possible…so do most people when given the choice.

If your organization has advocates, how do they advocate for you…work or character? There is a choice…and there is a difference.
